Salinas And Trent Propel Stars Past Sabres

River Forest, IL - Jessica Salinas (Bolingbrook, IL) poured in 22 points and senior guard Lindsey Trent (Frankfort, IN) added 19 as the Dominican University women's basketball team topped Marian University 64-53 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Stars' offense struggled through the first ten minutes of play, managing only 6 points as Dominican trailed the Sabres 11-6 with under nine minutes remaining in the opening period. However, the Stars 8-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Danielle Miller (Centralia, IL) lay-in as the Stars took a 14-13 lead with 3:30 left in the first half.

The two teams traded buckets and exchanged leads all the way until the 14:08 mark in the second half when Dominican took a 30-29 lead on a jumper by Trent. The Stars then began to pull away, leading by as many as 19 points during the final five minutes before settling in with the 11-point victory.

Salinas and Trent went a combined 14-for-28 from the field and 11-for-17 from the free throw line to lead the Stars to their third win of the young season (3-1, 1-1) and first win in NAC play. Freshman point guard Sarah Budz (Orland Park, IL) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added six points and six assists in 37 minutes of work in the winning effort.

For the Sabres, Stephanie Bouchard scored a team-high 14 points while Colleen Moody and Ashley Mueller added 10 points apiece. Mueller logged a double-double, adding 11 rebounds in the contest.

Dominican will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., on Tuesday December 16, to take on the MSOE Raiders before returning home to host Alverno College on Saturday, December 20. The Stars will then close out the 2008 portion of the season on Sunday, December 21, as they host Eureka College in a non-conference tilt.
