Stars Outlast Inferno in Overtime

River Forest, Ill. - The Dominican University women's basketball team outscored the Alverno College Inferno 10-8 in overtime to take a 71-69 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) victory last night.

The Stars lead the entire first half, enjoying a 26-20 lead at the break, despite shooting just over 32 percent from the field (9-for-28), including going 0-for-5 from three. The Stars did manage to convert on eight of its ten trips to the free throw line.

Alverno took its first lead of the game at 29-28 minutes into the second half. The Inferno continued to build upon its lead, leading by as many as seven with 12 minutes to play in regulation. Dominican then put together a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to recapture the lead at 43-42.

The two teams battled back and forth with Alverno leading by two with under twenty seconds to play when Jessica Salinas (Bolingbrook, IL) scored two of her game-high 20 points on a lay-in to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 61-61.

In the overtime period, the Stars took the lead for good, 67-65, in the final forty seconds on two-point bucket by Lindsey Trent (Frankfort, IN). Dominican's Wioleta Koziol (Mt. Prospect, IL) and Lisa Julkowski (Chicago, IL) sealed the victory for the Stars as they connected on four of six free throws in the final twenty seconds of overtime.

Dominican's starters combined to scored 70 of the team's 71 points led by Salinas' 20 points. Trent added 16 while Koziol chipped in 12 and freshman Megan Molloy (Chicago, IL) scored 12 in the winning effort. Julkowski added nine points of her own, converting on nine of her ten trips to the free throw line.

Despite being outshot by the Inferno, Dominican won the battle of the boards 44-36 with Molloy leading the way, as she grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to secure her third double-double of the season.

The Stars now stand at 7-16 overall and 5-11 in the NAC. On Saturday, Dominican will host the Marian College Sabres. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Dominican's Igini Sports Forum.
