Jovan Turley (Grand Rapids, MI), a 6'1" freshman guard, scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to propel the Stars to a 72-64 win over Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) and neighborhood rival the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Thursday evening.
The Stars opened up their biggest lead of the first half at 22-17 after a 7-0 run spanning 5:47 that was capped by a pair of free throws by Turley with 4:06 remaining in the opening period. However, the Cougars then put together a 13-3 run of their own that spanned the final minutes of the first half and the first 4:20 of the second half to open their largest lead of the night a 32-25 with 17:35 remaining.
The Stars cut into the Cougars' lead, connecting on three three-point field goals, including a pair of three's from sophomore Matt Stahl (Manitowoc, WI), on Dominican's next six possessions, shrinking the Concordia lead to 38-36 with just under 14 minutes to play.
Dominican claimed the lead for good at 51-49 on a lay in by junior Dan Borys (Crown Point, IN) with 7:30 remaining. Turley extended the Stars lead to five with a three on the next Dominican possession.
Dominican then sealed the victory at the free throw line, connecting on all eight of their foul shots during the final minute.
Turley scored twenty to lead all scorers while 6'7" senior Mike Haiduc added 16 in the winning effort for the Stars.
Dominican now stands at 10-10 on the season and is currently in seventh place in the 12-team conference with a 7-6 mark. The Stars will travel to Lakeland on Saturday to take on the Muskies in conference play before wrapping up the regular season with four home games. During that stretch the Stars will host Benedictine, Marian, Rockford and MSOE all from the NAC.
