River Forest, IL -
The Dominican University baseball team opened the season with a 4-game winning streak in Fort Myers, Fla. Since, the Stars have dropped seven of their last eight contests including a five-game losing skid that the Stars will look to snap as they open Northern Athletics Conference play on Saturday, hosting neighborhood rival Concordia University Chicago for a doubleheader at Alexian Field.
The Stars streak hit five games as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Millikin University on Monday, falling 9-2 in game one and 9-6 in game two.
In the opening game, the Stars managed just three hits, two coming in the top of the fourth as Dominic Tardi (Downers Grove, IL) banged a double to left in front of an RBI-single by Mike Albert (Chicago, IL) that drove in Tardi and freshman Jonathan Bober (Orland Park, IL) to put the Stars ahead 2-1. Millikin tied the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning.
Freshman Dan Hunoway (Tinley Park, IL) took the loss in game way, dropping to 1-1 on the season with a 6.10 earned run average in three appearances.
Millikin jumped out to an early lead in game two with a three-run first. Dominican rallied to knot the score at 3-3 with a three-run fourth, stringing together three singles and a walk to start the inning. Millikin answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the seventh to claim a 6-3 lead entering the eighth inning.
The Stars plated three runs in the top of the eighth on three walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and a balk to again tie the game at 6-6. However, Millikin scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth before sitting the Stars down in order in the top of the ninth, handing Dominican the 9-6 loss.
Kyle Stone (Round Lake, IL) took the loss for the Stars in game two, allowing two runs without retiring a batter in the Millikin eighth. The loss dropped the 5'11" right-hand senior to 0-1 on the season in his sixth appearance of the season.
