Softball Ties Single-Season Win Record

River Forest, IL - The Dominican University softball team tied the program's single-season victories record on Wednesday evening, sweeping a doubleheader in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action from Alverno College, besting the Inferno 11-3 in first game and 10-1 in game two. The pair of wins pushed the Stars overall record to 11-22 on the season with junior pitcher Susanna Gonzalez (Lockport, IL) picking up the wins in both ends of the doubleheader. Gonzalez now stands at 8-18 on the season.

The Stars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to five runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Megan Day (Zionsville, IN) started off the inning with a triple to the right center gap. Lea Marzolo (Fairview, MI) followed with a bunt single. With runners on first and third, Marzolo stole second with the throw from the catcher ending up in centerfield Day came into score and Marzolo advanced the third, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Abbey Bullerdick (New Market, IN). The Stars went on to bring nine batters to the plate in the first, getting RBI singles from sophomores Tina Calcagno (Westchester, IL) and Sam Skubal (Westchester, IL).

Alverno rallied back with three runs in the top of the second but Dominican countered with four in the bottom of the second and then added one in the third and plated another run in the fifth for the 11-3 victory in five innings.

Bullerdick and Marzolo logged three hits apiece in the game with Bullerdick driving in four runs and Marzolo scoring three.

The Stars continued to hammer Alverno pitching in game two, banging out 12 hits, including seven hits in a six-run sixth inning highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Bullerdick and Haley Johnson (Indianapolis, IN) as Dominican cruised to the 10-1 victory.

The Stars return to action on Saturday, traveling to Rockford for a pair of games with Rockford College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
