Hargraves Picks Up First Career Win In Women’s Tennis Opener

The Dominican University women’s tennis team helped head coach Sam Hargraves pick up his first career collegiate tennis victory with a 7-2 win over the Mount Mary College Blue Angels on Wednesday afternoon.
The Stars took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with Nadia Pencheva (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Emily Hereford (St. Louis, Mo.) picking up an 8-5 win at number two doubles and Courtney Bates (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and Christina Belmont (Northlake, Ill.) scoring an 8-1 victory at number three doubles.
In singles competition, Pencheva and Hereford picked up their second point each of the day. Pencheva notched a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win at number three singles while Hereford battled for a three-set victory at four singles, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. Monica Budzak (Chicago, Ill.) and Viatra Baker (North Aurora, Ill.) picked up wins at five and six singles respectively while Elizabeth Nelson (Riverside, Ill.) walked over her number one singles counterpart, 6-0, 6-0.
The match with the Blue Angles will serve as a tune-up for the Stars as they open Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play on Saturday with a pair of dual matches in Milwaukee, Wis. Dominican will face the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors at 10:00 a.m. and then square-off with the Alverno College Inferno later that afternoon.
