The Dominican University women’s soccer team picked up its 14th win of the season, tying the program’s single season record for wins, with a 9-0 victory over the Alverno College Inferno on Wednesday afternoon. The Stars, now 14-4-1 and 10-1-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC), claim the two-seed in the upcoming 2010 NAC Women’s Soccer Tournament and will host a semifinal match on Wednesday, November 3.
Freshman
Ashley Meyer (Evanston, Ill.) netted what proved to be the game-winner just 59 seconds in as
Adrienne Ryba (Roselle, Ill.) slid a ball behind the Inferno defense and Meyer won a foot-race to the ball before rolling a shot past the Inferno goalkeeper.
Dominican added two more first half goals as seniors
Michelle Reynoso (Burbank, Ill.) and
Mary Hoemeyer (Hazelwood, Mo.) tallied goals in the final regular season home games of their careers. Reynoso also notched a goal and an assist in the second half and now has seven goals and four assists on the season.
Nallely Arreola (Wheeling, Ill.), Meyer, Ryba,
Jennifer Russ (Downers Grove, Ill.) and
Jessica Rosales (Schaumburg, Ill.) also added goals in the second half. Ryba finished the match with six points, assisting on four of Dominican’s first five goals and leads the team with 12 goals and 11 assists, ranking among the conference leaders with 35 points in the Stars’ 19 games.
Dominican held a 37-0 advantage in shots, putting 20 shots on goal, and took seven corner kicks while surrendering none to the Inferno.
Dominican, the 2009 NAC Tournament runner-up, will be looking for its first conference tournament championship in program history. The six-team 2010 NAC Tournament kicks off on Sunday, October 31st, with matchups not yet set. Dominican and Aurora, the 2010 NAC regular season champion, both earned first round byes and will await the winners of the two first-round matchups in the conference semifinals.
