Long Night For Women’s Basketball In Season Opener

The Dominican University women’s basketball team led 5-2 early in the first half before the Monmouth University Fighting Scots rattled off 11 straight points and cruised to a 79-47 victory over the Stars in both teams’ season opener.
The Stars managed to shoot just 27.1 percent from the field (16-59) while committing 24 turnovers and losing the battle on the boards to the Fighting Scots 55-36. Monmouth shot 46 percent from the field (34-for-74) and went 4-for-10 from three-point range.
Dominican’s Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) held team-high honors with 12 points, going 5-for-19 from the field, including 1-for-9 from long distance. Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) added nine points and 13 rebounds while freshman Ashley Oliver (Bolingbrook, Ill.) chipped in eight points in her first collegiate action.
Dominican returns to action this weekend, playing in the Forester Tip-Off Classic hosted by Lake Forest College. The Stars will face Lake Forest on Friday night, tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and then take on the Grinnell College Pioneers on Saturday.
