Nallely Arreola (Waukegan, Ill.) notched the lone goal of the game in the 95th minute of play to propel the Dominican University women’s soccer team past the Edgewood College Eagles on Wednesday afternoon. The goal was the fifth score and second game-winner of the season for the junior forward.
The two teams felt each other out for much of the first half in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Tournament Semifinal, with the Stars tallying three first half shots and the Eagles managing just one shot on the stingy Dominican defense.
The pace of play picked up in the second half with the Stars getting off seven shots, putting two on goal, while the Eagles were able to get off three shots in the second half with neither team able to find the back of the net.
In the overtime period, it looked like the Eagles were going to have the first chance of the extra time as they were awarded a corner kick. However, the Dominican defense was able to clear and Arreola carried the ball up the right side of the field for a 3v3 opportunity for the Stars before netting the game-winner, beating Edgewood’s Kristi Frisch inside the near post.
Dominican's Megan Schulz (Redford, Mich.) improved to 14-4-1 on the season, posting her 11th shutout of the season.
In the process, the Stars set a new single-season win record for the program, with their 15th victory of the season. The Stars now stand at 15-4-1 on the season.
With the win, Dominican advances into the championship round of the 2010 NAC Tournament where they will meet the Aurora University Spartans, the regular season champions. In their last three meetings, the Stars and Spartans have played three games decided by one goal, with the Stars on the short side of the score each time, including the 2009 NAC Tournament finals when the Spartans edged the Stars 1-0 in overtime.
