Women’s Soccer Blanks Benedictine

The Dominican University women’s soccer team picked up its fifth straight victory on Tuesday afternoon, topping the Benedictine University Eagles 3-0 in River Forest. The win improves the Stars to 6-2-0 on the season and a perfect 4-0-0 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play while dropping Benedictine to 2-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the NAC.
Freshman Ashley Meyer (Evanston, Ill.) tallied the game-winner in the first minute of play, tracking down a ball slid behind the Eagles’ defense to give Meyer a breakaway opportunity less than 50 seconds into the match. The goal was the first of Meyer’s career and the fastest goal to open play in Dominican University women’s soccer history.
The score remained 1-0 into the 30th minute when the Stars’ took advantage of one of their three first half corner kicks as Elizabeth Ficek (Bloomington, Ill.) put a head on a ball served by Liz Phipps (Bloomington, Ill.). Ficek now has a team-best four goals on the season.
Senior Kelsy Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) rounded out the Stars’ scoring with an insurance goal in the 69th minute.
Dominican held a 20-6 advantage in shots, putting 12 shots on goal compared to just one shot on goal for the Eagles.
The Stars will return to the pitch on Saturday, hosting the Lakeland College Muskies in NAC women’s soccer action. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Dominican’s West Campus Field.
