Volleyball Impressive On Day One Of Star Classic

The Dominican University women’s volleyball team impressed the home crowd on Friday night with a pair of wins on the first day of the 2010 Star Classic. Dominican topped the Lawrence University Vikings 3-1 in the Stars’ first match of the day and then bested Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) foe, Benedictine University in the nightcap 3-0.
In the win over Lawrence, the Stars rebounded from a 25-23 loss in the first set, rallying to take the second, third and fourth sets 25-15, 25-15, 25-15.
Junior Kellie VanVoorhis (Union Mills, Ind.) paced the Stars with 13.5 points on seven kills, six aces and one block assist while Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo.), the 2009 Star Classic MVP, posted a team-high ten kills on 36 attempts. Sophomore setter Jessica Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill.) posted her second double-double of the season with 34 assists and ten digs.
Defensively, the Stars’ sophomore libero, Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.), tallied a game-high 17 digs while Dominican posted six blocks, led by senior Kasey Kiepura’s (Vernon Hills, Ill.) four block assists.
In the victory over the Benedictine, Dominican showed no mercy, topping the Eagles in three sets, 25-8, 25-18, 25-19. Lawrence hit a blistering .464 clip, totaling a match-high 15 kills on 28 attempts while committing just two errors. The 5-10 sophomore added two aces for 17.0 points in the winning effort.
The Stars will return to action on Saturday morning for Day Two of the Star Classic. Dominican will entertain the Grinnell College Pioneers at 9:00 a.m. and then close the tournament against Principia College at 1:00 p.m.
