Volleyball Tops Edgewood in Five-Set Win

MADISON – After taking the first two sets of the match, the Stars couldn’t close the door on the host Eagles in sets three or four, but came away with the 3-2 victory after a 15-8 fifth set win.  With the win, the Stars stay perfect in Northern Athletics Conference play (5-0), and improve their overall record to 13-4.

The teams would exchange the first four points of the match, bringing set one to a 2-2 tie before the Stars would take the lead for good and finish out the set 25-19.  They knocked down 16 kills in the first, led by Jacy Lawrence’s (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) seven.

In the second, the score would reach a 7-7 tie before the Stars once again took a lead they would not give up, and the set would end 25-22 in favor of Dominican.

Set three started with a 7-0 Eagles run, and the lead would remain in the Eagles’ favor until the Stars went off for a seven-point swing of their own to tie the score at 17-17.  But it would be the hosts that came out on top with a set three victory, 25-19.

In the fourth, the teams would exchange the lead through 16-16, but the Stars couldn’t hang on any further as Edgewood came away with a 25-20 victory to tie the match at two sets apiece.

The Eagles would keep that momentum and start set five with four straight points before Dominican found three of their own to close the gap to 4-3.  Edgewood answered back with another kill, but then it was Dominican who took six straight points on four kills to bring the score to 9-5 in favor of the Stars, a lead they would keep all the way through the final score of 15-8.

The fifth and deciding set was highlighted by a .524 Stars’ attack percentage, as five different players would contribute to a total 12 kills in the 15-point set.

Lawrence and Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) would each record double-doubles in the match, as  Lawrence knocked down a match-high 26 kills and had 15 digs while Dezelski came away with 10 kills of her own and 16 digs to support the defense.

Jess Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill./North) handed out 48 assists on the night, while defensive specialist Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led all defenders with a match-high 28 digs.

The Stars continue conference play on Sat., Oct. 1 at Maranatha.  The match start time is 10 a.m.
