OSHKOSH, Wis. – The Dominican University women’s volleyball team extended their win streak to 13 matches tonight after defeating Central College (Iowa) and Gustavus Adolphus College, both 3-1, in the UW-Oshkosh MVP Invitational. The two non-conference victories improve their overall record to 21-4, while their Northern Athletics Conference record remains 9-0.
Versus Central College in their first match, the Stars took sets one, three, and four by identical scores of 25-19, while the second set went 25-21in favor of Central (16-8). Jess Guerreri (Plainfield, Ill./North) ran the offense and handed out 37 assists to seven different Stars, including
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne), who knocked down 17 kills.
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) and
Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) also made their mark with seven kills apiece.
The Stars’ defense also did its part in the win, as 11 players would contribute to 99 digs in the match.
Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led the way picking up 30 Dutch attacks, while Dezelski picked up 20 and Guerreri and Lawrence recorded double-doubles with 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Against Gustavus Adolphus, the Stars would find themselves down 1-0 in the match as the Gusties (16-7) took set one 25-22. But they would answer quickly, taking set two 25-12, and keep the momentum for sets three (25-18) and four (25-22) to take the match 3-1.
Again, four Stars would record double-digit digs in the match: Yakey-17, Guerreri-16, Lawrence-15, and Dezelski-11.
Kellie Van Voorhis (Union Mills, Ind./La Porte) was also a force defensively, as she contributed to five of the team’s nine blocks with one solo and four block assists.
Offensively, Guerreri delivered 36 assists, while Lawrence once again led the team in kills with 16 and Gamboa had 10 of her own. The Stars also delivered from the service line, as they tallied 10 aces, three of which were from the hand of Dezelski.
The Stars continue play in the UW-Oshkosh MVP Invitational tomorrow, Oct. 15, as they take on the host Titans at 11 a.m., and then play the Eagles of UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m.
