RIVER FOREST, Ill. – With a 3-0 win over Rockford College tonight, the Dominican University women’s volleyball team advances to the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament semifinals and improves their overall record to 27-5 on the season.
Set one ended 25-19 in favor of the Stars after
Jess Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill./North) got the offense rolling with 10 assists in the set, five of which fed
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne), who led the Stars in kills.
In set two, the Stars would lead by as many as 14 points (19-5) after two six-point surges, and they went on to record 12 kills in the set for a .474 attack percentage. Lawrence again led the way in kills with four, while
Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) and
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) each had three. The Stars also benefited from 10 Rockford attack errors in the set to bring the final score to 25-11 in favor of Dominican.
In set three, the Stars found themselves tied 8-8 with the visiting Regents (9-21, 6-6 NAC) before
Kellie Van Voorhis (Union Mills, Ind./LaPorte) received a quick set from Guerrieri and knocked down the go-ahead point that gave the Stars a lead they would not give up.
En route to a third set final of 25-21 and the 3-0 match victory, the Stars were led by three match-high performances of Guerrieri, Lawrence, and Dezelski, as they recorded 29 assists, 13 kills, and 10 digs, respectively. Lawrence’s 13 kills came on just 20 attack attempts which also gave her a match-high .500 attack percentage on the night.
The win advanced the Stars to the semifinal round of the NAC Tournament in which they will host the Crusaders of Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday, Nov. 3. Match start time is set for 7 p.m.
