Stars Slighted In First NAC Contest

Box Score The Dominican University women’s basketball team opened Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon, falling 48-46 to the MSOE Raiders.  The Raiders Shannon Larson knocked down the game-winner with two seconds remaining after the Stars missed an eight-foot jumper on the opposite end of the floor.

Dominican, led by Ashley Oliver’s (Bolingbrook, Ill.) 20 points, shot just 27 percent from the field (15-55) and converted on 10 of 20 attempts from the foul line.  Senior Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) added 11 points in the losing effort.

On the defensive end of the floor, the Stars held the Raiders to 35 percent shooting from the field (18-51), including connecting on just two of the team’s ten attempts from three-point distance.  However, Carol Cayo pumped in 28 points on 11-for-15 shooting and converted on 6-for-8 trips to the free throw line.

The Stars trailed by five with 3:39 remaining but Oliver carried the Stars back with a five-point run, including hitting her third three of the game with 2:31 left to even the score at 44-44.  After a Cayo lay in, Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) knotted the score again with her lone bucket of the afternoon to set up the dramatic finish.

The loss drops the Stars to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the NAC.  Dominican will return to action on Wednesday, traveling down Division Street to Concordia University Chicago.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Cougars Geiseman Gymnasium.
