Stars Light It Up From Long Range

Box Score Leading by ten (42-32) at halftime, the Dominican University Stars heated up in the second half going 10-for-17 from behind the three-point stripe en route to a 92-71 win over Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, Wis., on Saturday afternoon.  For the game, the Stars connected on a record-setting 16 three-pointers, going 16-for-26 to tie the program’s single-game, NCAA-era record.
 
Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) shared game-high honors, pouring in 22 points apiece for Dominican.  Blom, who hit seven three’s last week in the Stars’ win over Concordia Chicago, connected on six of her seven attempts from long range and is shooting 51-percent from behind the arc on the season.  Budz, a sophomore, was 4-for-8 from behind the three-point stripe, hitting three in the second half.
 
Leading by nine (45-36) with 19:12 remaining, the Stars connected on four three-pointers over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 18 (57-39) and never looked back.
 
Laura Knieps (Tinley Park, Ill.) and Ashley Oliver (Bolingbrook, Ill.) added 12 and 11 points respectively for the Stars while Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) posted nine points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
 
The Crusaders were led by Laci Peterson’s 18 points.
 
The win was the Stars’ fourth consecutive victory, improving Dominican to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).  The Stars will return to action next Saturday, traveling to North Park University to take on the Vikings in a non-conference tilt.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
