Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) buried a three from the top of the key with one-tenth of a second left on the clock to lift the Stars to a 71-68 win over the Lakeland College Muskies in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. It was one of 12 three point field goals the Stars made on the afternoon and one of three triples for the Stars’ senior guard.
The Muskies opened a 22-16 lead with 7:03 to play in the opening half, only to see a 6-0 run on back-to-back three’s by
Jamie Campos (LaGrange, Ill.) and sophomore
Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) erase the Stars’ deficit. Dominican continued to build momentum, holding a slight 33-31 lead at the break behind 12 first-half points from Campos on 4-for-6 shooting from long distance.
The two teams traded leads through much of the first ten minutes of the second half until Blom connected on a three with 10:23 to play to give Dominican its sixth lead of the game at 58-55. After back-to-back layups by Blom and
Amber Nyssen (Byron Center, Mich.), Dominican opened its largest lead of the game 62-55 with just over eight minutes to play.
Ahead by six (68-62) with 4:50 to play, Dominican went on a near five-minute scoreless drought while the Muskies chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 68-68 on a free throw by Jessica Genke with 31 seconds to play, setting the stage for Blom’s heroics.
The Stars were paced by Campos’ 15 points while Blom chipped in 13 points in the winning effort. The pair of Stars’ sharpshooters went 8-for-11 from long distance while as a team, Dominican was 12-for-28 from three-point range.
The Muskies were paced by Ganke and Becky Mayo who shared game-high honors with 24 points apiece.
Dominican, now 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the NAC, will return to action on Tuesday, hosting the Rockford College Regents for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in the Igini Sports Forum.
