Women’s Soccer Tops Alverno

Box Score After opening the season with three straight losses, the Dominican University women’s soccer team is now unbeaten in its last four matches, including a 4-1 victory over the Alverno College Inferno on Tuesday afternoon to improve the Stars to 3-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.

The Stars scored the first four goals of the match, including a pair of second-half goals off the foot of sophomore Ashley Meyer (Evanston, Ill.).  Dominican’s first goal came in the 22nd minute as Liz Phipps notched her fourth goal of the season.  Five minutes later, Nathalie Mathis (Mudelein, Ill.) netted what proved to be the game-winner.  It was the first goal of the freshman’s career.

Meyer then added a pair of insurance goals in the 52nd and 81st minutes to give Dominican a 4-0 advantage.

The Inferno got on the board in the 87th minute to spoil the shutout as Rachel Krueger tallied her fourth goal of the season.

Dominican dominated the stat sheet, ripping 20 shots to just five for the Inferno and putting 11 shots on goal while Alverno managed four.  The Stars also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Megan Schulz (Redford, Mich.) improved to 3-3-1 in goal for Dominican, logging four saves on the afternoon and lowering her goals against average to 1.25 in 650 minutes in goal.

Dominican will play on Saturday in Watertown, Wis., against the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders before returning home to host Webster University on Sunday afternoon.
