Women’s Soccer Wins Third in a Row

Biggs
Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Dominican University women’s soccer team battled through rainy conditions and physical play versus Webster University today, but prevailed and won their third contest in a row.  With the win, the Stars improve to 5-3-1 overall and remain 3-0-1 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

The Stars would strike first, as junior Kelly Gerwitz (Florissant, Mo./Incarnate Word) and senior Liz Phipps (Bloomington, Ill./University) led the offensive attack with shots on goal in the 21st and 23rd minutes of play.  Phipps would get another attempt in the 43rd minute, but the score remained 0-0 into the half.

It didn’t take long for the Stars to score in the second half, however, as junior Hayley Biggs (Bloomington, Ill.) sent one to the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 51st minute.   It was a yellow card against the visiting Gorloks that led to a Phipps shot off the post and Biggs rebound that would prove to be the game-winning goal.

The defense would hang on to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Stars, and senior Megan Schulz (Redford, Mich./Thurston) saved her third shot attempt by Webster in the 86th minute to seal the second consecutive shutout victory for the Stars.

The team returns to conference play this week, as they travel to Benedictine University on the 28th of September, and host Marian University on October 1st in Dominican’s Homecoming contest.  Game time on the 1st is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field.
