Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Dominican University women’s soccer team battled through rainy conditions and physical play versus Webster University today, but prevailed and won their third contest in a row. With the win, the Stars improve to 5-3-1 overall and remain 3-0-1 in Northern Athletics Conference play.
The Stars would strike first, as junior
Kelly Gerwitz (Florissant, Mo./Incarnate Word) and senior
Liz Phipps (Bloomington, Ill./University) led the offensive attack with shots on goal in the 21
st and 23
rd minutes of play. Phipps would get another attempt in the 43
rd minute, but the score remained 0-0 into the half.
It didn’t take long for the Stars to score in the second half, however, as junior
Hayley Biggs (Bloomington, Ill.) sent one to the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 51
st minute. It was a yellow card against the visiting Gorloks that led to a Phipps shot off the post and Biggs rebound that would prove to be the game-winning goal.
The defense would hang on to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Stars, and senior
Megan Schulz (Redford, Mich./Thurston) saved her third shot attempt by Webster in the 86
th minute to seal the second consecutive shutout victory for the Stars.
The team returns to conference play this week, as they travel to Benedictine University on the 28
th of September, and host Marian University on October 1
st in Dominican’s Homecoming contest. Game time on the 1
st is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field.
