Women’s Soccer Edged By #20 Chicago

Box Score The Dominican University women’s soccer team battled the University of Chicago Maroons, ranked 20th in the NSCAA Top 25 Preseason Poll, but came up on the short end of a 3-2 match, surrendering the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of play.

The Maroons took an early 1-0 lead as Sara Kwan netted her first goal of the season in the eighth minute, converting on the second penalty kick of the game for Chicago.

Dominican answered quickly, leveling the score at 1-1 just two minutes later, as Ashley Meyer (Evanston, Ill.) got on the end of a ball served by senior defender Liz Phipps (Bloomington, Ill.).  The score was the first of the season for the Stars’ top returning goal scorer and the seventh of her career.

The score remained even into the 39th minute as Allison Hegel gave the Maroon’s a 2-1 advantage they would hold into the half.

Meyer again evened the score, this time taking advantage of the lone corner kick of the game for the Stars in the 74th minute.

Chicago eventually netted the game-winner with under three minutes to play as Claire Mackevicius beat Dominican’s Megan Schulz (Redford, Mich.).

The loss drops the Stars to 0-2-0 on the season while lifting the Maroons to 2-0-0.  Dominican returns to action on Wednesday, hosting the University of Dubuque Spartans for a 4:30 PM kickoff on the Stars’ West Campus Field.
