Box Score Senior guard
Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) scored a game-high 25 points but none bigger than a free throw line jumper with just over six seconds remaining in overtime that lifted the Dominican University women’s basketball team to a 63-62 win over the Edgewood College Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
With less than ten seconds remaining, the Stars inbounded the ball to Blom on the right wing and she promptly drove towards the middle using a behind the back dribble to shake her defender and raise up at the free throw line to nail the game-winner, hitting nothing but net to lift Dominican to 12-7 on the season and 8-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).
The Stars outscored the Eagles 6-5 in the extra frame, with Blom scoring four in the overtime period.
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) had the Stars’ other basket in overtime, connecting on a jumper in the paint to knot the score at 61-all with one minute to play. On the Eagles ensuing possession, Dareon Henderson, missed the front end of a two-shot foul to set up Blom’s heroics.
Edgewood did have one last chance but was whistled for an illegal screen to preserve the win for the Stars.
Blom was 10-for-17 from the field to lead the Stars, going 3-for-6 from distance.
Ashley Oliver (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and
Laura Knieps (Tinley Park, Ill.) added ten points apiece while
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) led the team with eight rebounds.
Sadie Ewing paced the Eagles’ offense with 21 points, going 8-for-12 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three.
The Stars return to action on Wednesday, hosting neighborhood rival Concordia University Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in the Igini Sports Forum.
