Stars Play To Draw On The Road To Open 2012 Campaign

Box Score Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) and the Dominican University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at the University of Chicago on Friday evening to open the 2012 season.  Trailing 1-0 in the 87th minute, Roberts got on the end of a free kick off the foot of Trent Miller (Rockford, Ill.) to force the game to overtime.

The two teams felt each other out for much of the first 45 minutes, with the Stars holding a 5-4 advantage in shots.  Dominican's best chance came in the 13th minute as Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) was denied by the Chicago goalkeeper from point blank.

Chicago's offense started rolling early in the second half but freshman goalkeeper Wesley Zank (Sun Prairie, Wis.) kept the game scoreless with a save in the 47th minute. After another save by Zank, a Dominican yellow card gave the Maroons a restart and Jorge Bilbao took advantage on the free kick to give the Maroons a 1-0 advantage.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Maroons until Roberts found the back of the net in the 87th minute to force OT.

Neither team put a shot on frame in either of the overtime periods.

The Maroons held a 13-10 advantage in shots, but the Stars put five shots on goal while Chicago managed to put just four shots on frame.

Both teams run their record to 0-0-1 on the season with Dominican returning to action on Sunday as they host the North Park University Vikings for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff on West Campus Field.
