Autumn Koomler (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made an immediate impact in her first collegiate action, pressuring the Vikings' goalkeeper into a turnover before scoring on an empty net in the 41st minute as the Dominican University women's soccer team toppled Lawrence University 2-0 on Friday afternoon to open the 2012 season.
Kelly Petty (Crystal Lake, Ill.) added an unassisted goal in the 85th minute and freshmen goalkeepers
Allie Wagner (Sheboygan, Wis.) and
Sara Stepanovich (Des Plaines, Ill.) shared a shutout as the Stars won their season opener for the first time since 2008.
Dominican held a 19-10 advantage in shots, putting 12 shots on goal compared to just five shots on goal for the Vikings.
Wagner was credited for the win as she got the start, making three saves in the first half. Â Stepanovich continued to shutdown the Viking offense, logging two saves in the final 45 minutes.
The Stars have little time to enjoy the victory, returning to the West Campus pitch on Saturday afternoon to take on the Hope College Flying Dutch. Â Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
