Box Score 2 The Dominican University women's volleyball team opened the 2012 season on Saturday afternoon splitting a pair of matches on the opening day of the Labor Day Classic hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.
In the season opener, the Stars topped the DePauw University Tigers 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18).
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo.) and
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) paced the Stars offensive attack along with setter
Jessica Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill.), who racked u p 41 assists in the four-set victory. Lawrence hit an impressive .400, tallying a team-high 18 kills on 40 attacks while committing just two errors. Dezelski added 14 kills.
Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.) led the Stars with 17 digs while freshman
Olivia Szuszkiewicz (Barrington, Ill.) added 15 digs in her first collegiate match.
Match number two of the day pitted two teams fighting to break into the AVCA Division III Top 25, with the Stars squaring off against Cornell College. The Rams got the best of the Stars in the matchup, sweeping the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-12). Freshman
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) shared team-high honors with Dezelski with five kills apiece while Yakey again paced the Stars with 13 digs.
Dominican returns to action on Sunday, wrapping up Labor Day Classic play with matches against Eureka College and the host Washington University Bears, the number two ranked team in the country.
