Box Score The Dominican University women’s volleyball team avoided losses back-to-back games for the first time all season, edging the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders in five sets (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) to hand the Crusaders their first loss of the season.
A balanced offensive attack for the Stars was able to win out over the Crusaders’ one-man wrecking crew of Torey DeLozier. DeLozier accounted for nearly two-thirds of the Crusaders’ offense, knocking down 41 kills on 89 swings while committing just nine errors. Laci Peterson added 20 kills for the Crusaders while five other hitters logged two kills apiece.
Dominican’s balanced attack was paced by freshman
Caitlen Foote’s (Dexter, Mich.) 16 kills while
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) and
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo.) added 14 and ten kills respectively.
Becca Fritz (Mount Carroll, Ill.) chipped in seven kills in the winning effort while
Julie Schulenburg (Springfield, Ill.) knocked down six kills.
Defensively, the Stars were led by libero
Liz Yakey’s (Sun Prairie, Wis.) 25 digs while Dezelski and Foote logged double-doubles with 15 and 11 digs respectively. Dezelski also added four total blocks, including two solo blocks.
The win improves the Stars to 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC). The Stars will travel to Lake Forest College on Tuesday to take on the Foresters in a non-conference tilt before returning to conference play next weekend against Lakeland College and Marian University.
