Box Score 2 The Dominican University volleyball team went 2-0 on the first day of the 2012 Star Classic, knocking off Willamette University 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 15-13) and Greenville College 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-15).
In the opening match of the classic,
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) knocked down a match-high 22 kills on 58 attempts while teammate
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo.) added 15 kills on 45 attempts.
Jessica Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill.) dished out 50 assists as the Stars' offense ran through the senior setter.
Defensively,
Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.) posted a team-high 26 digs while Dezelski and Guerrieri logged double-doubles with 19 and ten digs respectively. Freshman
Olivia Szuszkiewicz (Barrington, Ill.) narrowly missed out on her first career double-double with 15 digs and eight kills.
In the Stars’ nightcap, Dominican disposed of the Greenville Panthers in three sets, paced by
Julie Schulenburg (Springfield, Ill.) and freshman
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.). Schulenburg totaled 11 points with six kills, one solo block, six block assists and one service ace while Foote tallied a match-high nine kills.
As a team, the Stars posted seven total blocks, forcing the Panthers into 20 hitting errors.
The Stars return to action on Saturday, playing the Lakeland College Muskies at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the Star Classic on Saturday evening.
