Box Score The Dominican University women's volleyball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with a commanding three set (25-16, 25-16, 25-12) victory over the Benedictine University Eagles on Wednesday night.
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) continued her outstanding senior campaign, leading the Stars with a match-high 12 kills on 29 total swings with just two errors for a .345 hitting percentage.
With set one tied at 8-8,
Tessa Griparis (Shorewood, Ill.) put the Stars in front with a kill before
Lauren Reiniger (Mason, Ohio) stepped back to serve five straight points, including a pair of kills by
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.), to open a 14-8 lead and Dominican never looked back.
Dominican knocked down 15 kills in set one while holding the Eagles to just a .103 hitting percentage with ten kills and six errors on 39 attacks.
The second set followed a similar pattern as the Stars 9-2 run to open an 18-11 lead. While the Stars collected 15 kills in the second set, the Eagles managed just eight kills and committed five errors. Freshman
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) asserted herself in the second set, collecting five kills on just eight swings and tallying a block assist.
Dominican opened an early 9-4 lead in the third set before the Eagles clawed back to even the score at 9-9. After a timeout settled down Dominican, it was all Stars the rest of the way as Dominican outscored the Eagles 16-3 the rest of the way to finish off Benedictine.
Zanoni finished the night with nine kills and just one error on 17 attacks while
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) added seven kills in two sets. Wilson set the Stars' offense, dishing out 38 assists.
Defensively,
Cheyanne Kelly (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Wilson shared team-high honors with 13 digs apiece while Griparis was in on four of the Stars' five blocks.
With the win, Dominican improves to 20-9 overall and 9-1 in the NACC. The Stars will be back in action on Saturday, closing out the 2013 regular season at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. The Stars' match with the Muskies is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
