Dominican University's
Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) flicked a header past MSOE's Garrett Farin and inside the far post in the 109
th minute to lift the Stars past the MSOE Raiders 2-1 and give Dominican a share of the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) regular season title.
"That was a resilient effort by our guys today," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach in his 20
th season. "We fought to the end and left everything on the field. I'm proud of our guys and happy for them that we were able to get the win and earn our ninth straight conference championship."
The Stars, needing a win to pick up a share of the NACC championship with MSOE, were the aggressor throughout the majority of the match, pressing forward on the Raiders and getting dangerous in the final third on set pieces throughout the opening 45 minutes. Dominican eventually broke through in the 33
rd minute as
Trent Miller's (Rockford Ill.) long throw into the MSOE six-yard box rattled off a couple of defenders before finding its way into the MSOE goal for an own goal.
Dominican outshot the Raiders 6-3 in the opening half, limiting MSOE to just one shot on goal and one corner kick while putting three shots on frame and winning four corner kick opportunities.
Needing a goal, MSOE pressed forward in the opening minutes of the second half, eventually tallying the equalizer in the 52
nd minute as Logan Andryk, the reigning NACC
Offensive Player of the Year, carried endline before sending a cross towards the mouth of the goal where Silas Linares was able to get a head on it and beat Dominican's
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) who took over in goal for the Stars at the half.
Dominican was able to reorganize after the goal, allowing six shots for the Raiders in the second half, with just three coming after the 57
th minute and neither team scored throughout the remainder of regular time.
After one scoreless overtime period, the sides continued to battle into the final two minutes of the second overtime period when Dominican took advantage of another throw-in deep into MSOE's defensive third. This time Miller found his target with Marvin flicking the ball past Farin for his fifth goal of the season, the second game-winner for the senior defender.
"I was disappointed that we gave up that goal early in the second half," commented Baumann. "We knew we needed to win the game in order to take our share of the conference championship and earn the top seed in the conference tournament. There was no quit in our team today"
The Stars outshot the Raiders 14-10 for the match with Dominican putting seven shots on frame while MSOE managed just three shots on goal with Zach Watson and Gongora making one save apiece for Dominican.
Dominican, now 13-4-2 and riding a ten-match winning streak, will sit idle this weekend and host a NACC Tournament semifinal match next Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at West Campus Field. The Stars will host the lowest remaining seed after the quarterfinal matches on Sunday.
