Stars Drop Season Opener In St. Louis

The Dominican University women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season at the Cavallo Tip-Off in St. Louis, Missouri, falling to the host Webster University Gorloks, 70-51.

The Stars trimmed a 15-point halftime deficit down to eight, 34-26, as they opened the second half on a 9-2 run capped by a Jasmyn Hardin (Cincinnati, Ohio) lay-in with just under 17 minutes to play.

However, the Gorloks answered with their own 7-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to extend the lead back to 15, 41-26, and led by double-digits the rest of the night.

Claudia DeNigris (Addison, Ill.) scored a team-high 14 points for the Stars, going 4-for-10 from three-point distance.  Haley Kroll (Nenana, Ala.) added 12 points while Hardin chipped in six and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the losing effort.

For the game, Dominican shot just 18-for-59 from the field and turned the ball over 28 times, leading to 23 points off of turnovers for Webster.

The Gorloks were paced by Ashley Brooks' 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field as Webster managed to shoot 50-percent from the field in the game.

Dominican is back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Spalding University to close out the Cavallo Tip-Off Tournament.  The Stars then return home to River Forest to host Kalamazoo College on Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff in the Igini Sports Forum.
