The Dominican University men's basketball team cut a 25-point first half deficit down to five points in the second half but fell short in an 80-67 loss at Wisconsin Lutheran College on Tuesday evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) and
Quinn Pokora (Mundelein, Ill.) combined for 38 points for the Stars in the losing effort.
Trailing 52-30, Dominican went on an 8-0 run to narrow the gap. After the Warriors stabilized, Mayberry sparked another 7-0 run for the Stars as he buried a three-pointer to narrow the Stars' deficit to 62-48 with 9:46 to play.
After back-to-back layups for Mayberry, a Warriors' three-point play pushed the lead back to 13 before
Kevin Mack (Detroit, Mich.) knocked down a three for the Stars to ignite another Dominican run. Pokora capped the run for Dominican with a three-point play that cut the lead down to 65-60 with 5:52 to go.
Wisconsin Lutheran answered with their own five-point swing to push the lead back to double-digits and dash the Stars' hopes for a comeback.
Mayberry finished with 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field. The Stars' sophomore guard added seven assists, four steals and four rebounds. Pokora dropped in 16 points, 12 in the second half.
Jim Marose paced the Warriors' offense that shot over 61-percent from the field. Marose scored a game-high 26 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field and converting on six of nine attempts from the foul line. Kyle Stelse and Brett Lubbe added 13 points apiece to round out three in double-figures scoring for Wisconsin Lutheran.
Dominican returns to the courts after the Thanksgiving holiday, playing host the Marian University Sabres on Saturday in the Igini Sports Forum. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
