Box Score The Dominican University women's soccer team picked up back-to-back victories for the first time since October of 2012, topping the Millikin University Big Blue 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in River Forest.
Â
For the Stars,
Kelli Iovino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to stake the Stars to a 2-0 lead in the first half. On the first goal,
Leah Tednes (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) received a pass near the penalty area and slotted a pass to Iovino who made a run towards the goal. Iovino fired a shot inside the far post.
Â
Moments later, Tednes again found Iovino who ripped a shot from 16 yards out. Tednes created the play, taking the ball away from a Millikin defender before leaving a pass for Iovino.
Â
Dominican tacked on an insurance goal as
Lauren Zuro (Elmwood Park, Ill.) collected a rebound off of a
Tania Martinez (Chicago, Ill.) shot and buried a shot into the Millikin goal to put the Stars ahead 3-0.
Â
From there the Stars defense led by goalkeeper
Sara Stepanovich (Des Plaines, Ill.) clamped down and collected the team's second shutout in as many games. Dominican allowed just seven shots, two on goal, to the Millikin Big Blue while the Stars fired off 24 shots, putting a total of ten on frame.
Â
The back-to-back wins mark the first 2-0-0 start for the Stars since joining the NCAA Division III ranks in 2000. Dominican will look to add to its record start next Saturday when the Lawrence University Vikings come to River Forest for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff on West Campus Field.
