Box Score The Dominican University women's soccer team extended its program-best start to the season with a 3-0 win over the visiting Lawrence University Vikings on Saturday afternoon. The Stars got goals from Kelli Iovino, Kelly Gerwitz and Lexi Kiotis while Sara Stepanovich ran the Stars' shutout streak to 270 minutes to start the year.
Iovino notched what proved to be the game-winner, her second in as many games, in just the fourth minute of play. Leah Tednes slotted a perfect pass that led Iovino inside the six-yard box with just the goalkeeper to beat and Iovino buried a shot with her right foot.
While Dominican could not find the back of the net again the remainder of the first half, the Stars held an 11-6 advantage in shots with Stepanovich having to make two saves while the Vikings' Dani Glass was forced to make four with the Stars putting five shots on frame.
Dominican started the second half the way they did the first, scoring less than five minutes into the half with Gerwitz and Iovino connecting on a set play off a corner kick. Iovino played a short-corner ball for Gerwitz and the senior bent a shot from outside the top corner of the 18-yard box inside the back post for the 2-0 lead.
The Stars continued to dominate the second half, posting a clean sheet over the final 45 minutes while Kiotis netted her first collegiate goal in the 69
th minute. Taylor Adler played a perfectly timed ball on the ground as Kiotis made a run to sneak in behind the Vikings' back line, giving the freshman a 1v1 with Glass.
The win pushed the Stars' record to 3-0-0 to open the 2014 season, equaling Dominican's win total from a year ago. The Stars will put their win streak on the line on Tuesday as they host another unbeaten in the University of Dubuque Spartans. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. on West Campus Field.
