The Dominican University men's soccer team dropped the final game of the 2015 regular season, falling to the Benedictine University Eagles 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field. The two sides will meet again on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Tuesday, November 3.
"I am disappointed," said the Stars' head coach Erick Baumann. "We were flat and gave up a goal we shouldn't have given up. We started to chase the scoreboard late, but at that point we put ourselves in a position to fail."
The Eagles' Erik Stammer tallied the lone goal of the match, tapping in a slotted pass from Alex Unzueta in the 19
th minute of play.
Dominican had a number of chances but Benedictine's Zorohn Reed and Antonio Marti-Polo logged two saves apiece to post the combined shutout while
Zach Watson (Carol Stream, Ill.) faced six shots and made two saves in his first appearance of the season for the Stars.
In total, Dominican held a 10-6 advantage in shots and 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss drops the Stars to 10-4-3 on the season and 6-2-2 in the NACC. Dominican will be the four-seed in the NACC Tournament, hosting the fifth-seeded Eagles for a noon kickoff on Saturday on the West Campus pitch.
"It comes down to needing to bring the right effort and the right intensity to each and every game," said Baumann when asked to look ahead to Saturday. "The effort has to come from each and every player. We didn't get that today. We will prepare the way we always prepare and put the team in a position to succeed but when the whistle blows, it will all come down to effort."
