Jonathan Arzeta's (Des Plaines, Ill.) goal in the 71
st minute broke a scoreless tie and the Dominican University men's soccer team added an insurance marker five minutes later as the Stars topped the Rockford University Regents 2-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
"We needed someone to make a difference in the second half today and Arzeta did," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach in his 21
st season, following the match.
Despite outshooting the Regents 8-1 in the first half with the Stars putting four shots on frame, Dominican could not find the back of the net and the Regents opened the second half content to defend.
Pressing for a goal, Dominican pushed forward throughout the second half eventually breaking through when Arzeta was able to get a head on
Fernando Telles' (Carpentersville, Ill.) service and beat the Regents' Anthony Beck for his third goal of the season.
Five minutes later Arzeta's playmaking ability led to
Javier Romero's (Wheeling, Ill.) first goal of the season as Arzeta rolled a pass in front of the goalmouth that the freshman finished off.
For the match, Dominican outshot the Regents 20-1, putting nine shots on frame to just one shot on goal for Rockford.
Dominican's
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the shutout, his third of the season, lowering his goals against average to 0.55 as the junior goalkeeper improved to 7-2-2 on the season.
The Stars, now 7-2-2 on the season and 4-0-1 in the NACC, will entertain the MSOE Raiders for a noon kickoff on the West Campus pitch. The match is a rematch of the 2014 NACC Tournament championship match, which the Raiders won 1-0 to snap Dominican's string of consecutive NACC tournament titles at eight.
