The Dominican University men's basketball team played a back-and-forth game Wednesday night against the Edgewood College Eagles with the Eagles eventually coming out on top 84-78 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action.
Â
The matchup featured nine ties and eight lead changes with Dominican taking their last lead when freshman
Charlie Ollis (Mobile, Ala.) broke a 63-63 tie as he went 1-for-2 at the foul line with 7:35 to play. A couple of possessions later, Tyler Lemke put the Eagles back on top 66-64 as he finished a three-point play while drawing the fourth foul on Dominican's
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.).
Â
The Stars tied the game twice more before Tyler Westrick's three with 4:33 to play broke a 68-68 tie before Adam Freitag's fifth three of the game doubled the Eagles' lead to 74-68 with less than four minutes to play.
Â
Dominican narrowed the gap all the way down to one twice more but could not catchup with the Eagles who went 10-for-10 from the foul line over the final 2:38 despite shooting just 14-for-24 from the free throw line the rest of the game.
Â
Mayberry continued to carry the Stars' offensive load, scoring a game-high 32 points in the losing effort. The Stars' junior guard is averaging 24.6 points per contest on the season and is even better in Dominican's last three games, dropping in 35, 20 and 32 to average 29.0 points per game. Mayberry is shooting a NACC-best .722 from three-point range on the year and is 12-for-14 from three over the last three games including shooting 5-for-5 from behind the three-point arc on Wednesday night.
"Josh [Mayberry] has played well this season," said Dominican's head coach Mark White. Â "He has been very efficient on the offensive end of the floor and a much improved defensive player."
Â
Mayberry's classmate
Kevin Mack (Detroit, Mich.) added 14 points in 24 minutes of the bench. Mack shot 4-for-6 from the field including 2-for-4 from three. Aside from Mayberry and Mack, the rest of the Dominican roster managed to shoot just 3-for-18 from long range.
Â
For the Eagles, Freitag led four players in double-figures, scoring a team-high 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field. The junior was one of three players to have career nights for Edgewood who came into the contest averaging just 60.0 points per contest. Tyler Lemke scored a career-high 17 and Tyler Westrick added a career-high 14 while Emilio Lopez added 11.
Â
The Stars, now 0-5 on the season and 0-4 in the NACC, return to action on Saturday when they travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against the MSOE Raiders. Dominican will then head to Knox College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt against the Prairie Fire on Monday night.
