The Dominican University women's basketball team picked up a win in non-conference action on Monday evening, topping the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks 56-39 behind double-double efforts from both
Angela Evola (Marseilles, Ill.) and
Jasmyn Hardin (Cincinnati, Ohio). Together, Evola and Hardin combined for 28 points and 31 rebounds to pace the Stars to their second win of the season.
The Stars overcame a slow start, shooting just 19-percent from the field in the first quarter and trailing 12-10 after ten minutes to outscore the Scarlet Hawks in the second period 12-4 to take a 22-16 lead at the half.
Dominican then clamped down defensively, holding the Scarlet Hawks to just seven second half field goals, leading by as many as 20 along the way.
Evola finished with a game-high 18 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field to lead three in double-figures scoring in the winning effort.
Allie Tapanes (Winfield, Ill.) chipped in 12 while Hardin finished with ten and pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive boards, to cap her seventh double-double of the season. For Evola, her 12 rebounds rounded out her first double-double effort of the year.
"It was a great team win today," commented Dominican's fourth-year head coach
Gabby Johnson. "Today showed our kids that our offense can't always be your energy source."
"We have been stuck at one win the last few years," continued Johnson, "and I think today helped us get over a huge mental hurdle."
The win pushes the Stars' overall record to 2-9 on the season in Dominican's final game of 2015. The Stars will not return to the court until January 5 when they travel to Lisle, Illinois, to take on the Benedictine University Eagles in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) road game for Dominican.
