Stars Sweep #13 MSJ Lions

Dominican wins fifth straight

The Dominican University men's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to five matches on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win (25-16, 27-25, 25-23) over the 13th-ranked Mount St. Joseph University Lions in the Igini Sports Forum.  Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) continued his outstanding play, following up last night's ten-kill, three-block performance with eight kills on 11 total swings, hitting .545 in the winning effort.

Dominican asserted itself in the first set, racing out to a 19-12 lead after a six-point run for the Stars and never looking back.  Freshman Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) knocked down four kills in the set as the Stars hit .226 in the set and posted a 64-percent sideout percentage.  Solbrig was  perfect 3-for-3 on the attack and posted three block assists in the opening frame.

The Stars carried the momentum of the first-set victory into set number two, opening a 19-11 lead.  However, the Lions answered with a long run, pulling within 20-24 before making another push.  Three Dominican errors sandwiched around a Lions' kill evened the set at 24-24.  The Lions then served for set point after yet another Dominican error.  Spicer and the Stars earned a sideout, evening the set at 25-25 before back-to-back errors by the Lions staked the Stars to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Mount St. Joseph played with a little more confidence in the third set, playing with the lead much of the set, including leading as late as 21-20.  Back to back errors by the Lions gave Dominican a 22-21 advantage ahead of a kill by the Stars' Zachery Sinn (Winfield, Ill.) and the Stars led 23-21.  After a setting error by Mount St. Joseph, the Stars served for match point.  After a sideout and a Lions' kill by Alex Vohland, Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) put the match away for Dominican with his eighth kill of the afternoon.

For the Stars, Spicer collected a team-high ten kills while Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) dished out 33 assists.  Defensively, Spicer, Royko and Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) logged seven digs apiece while as a team Dominican tallied 8.5 total blocks led by Solbrig who was in on six of those blocks.

The Stars, now 5-3 on the season and 5-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL), return to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting the seventh-ranked UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs for a 12:00 p.m. match in the Igini Sports Forum.
