Stars Victorious In Inaugural MCVL Match

The Dominican University men's volleyball team cruised to a three-set (25-16, 25-10, 25-21) win over the Loras College Duhawks in the Stars' inaugural match in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League in Dubuque, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon.  The win was Dominican's first of the season, pushing the Stars to 1-3 on the year with the Benedictine University Eagles up next for Dominican on Thursday.

Freshman Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) led the way for the Stars, combining for 19 kills on just 30 attacks while committing only two errors.  Spicer knocked down a team-high ten kills while playing in just two sets while Solbrig collected nine kills while hitting a lofty .571.

In total, Dominican's offensive attack, ran by sophomore setter Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) (24 assists), posted a season-best .401 hitting percentage.  The Stars limited their offensive miscues to just eight errors on 87 total swings while collecting 43 kills.

Defensively, Dominican surrendered just 31 kills to the host Duhawks and posted 10.5 blocks at the net.  Solbrig posted a team-high six total blocks (1 BS, 5 BA) while Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) tallied a team-best nine digs.

"I'm very pleased with today's performance," said second-year head coach Dan Ames when asked about his Stars' first win of the season.  "Our starters are starting to play at the level we were expecting from them entering the season.  It is a work in progress but we are taking steps forward."
