The Dominican University softball split a pair of games on the third day of the team's trip to the Gene Cusic Classic, rocking the Bethany Lutheran Vikings 12-2 in five innings before falling to the Emory & Henry Wasps 6-0 to move to 4-2 on the trip.
The Stars will enjoy a break on Wednesday before returning to action at 9:00 a.m. EST on Thursday against the NJCU Gothic Knights.
Game One: Dominican 12, Bethany Lutheran 2 (5 Inn.) Falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first,
Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) settled in, allowing just one runner to reach in the second and third while the Stars' offense exploded.
Dominican pushed across four in the bottom of the first.
Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.) walked and later scored on a single by
Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.).
Alyssa Domico (Naperville, Ill.), who reached on an error, scored on a bunt single by
Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) and Barajas came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Siena Gyure (Crown Point, Ind.). Burns then scored when
Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) singled to right.
The Stars tacked on four more in the bottom of the third. Rea and
Sarah Conway (Chicago, Ill.) had RBI singles while Domico brought home two with a single to left.
In the fourth, Dominican put the game away with four more runs. Gyure doubled to put runners at second and third. Procter followed with an RBI single and Gyure then scored when Conway grounded out to third.
Lindsey Dudek (Posen, Ill.) then lined an RBI single. Dominican's last run came as
Olivia Babusci (Park Ridge, Ill.) doubled to right and Dudek scored with the help of a Viking throwing error.
Slouber and Gyure shared time in the circle with Slouber picking up the win. The senior worked three innings, allowing two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out three. Gyure tossed the final two innings, scattering three hits and punching out two while walking none.
Game Two: Emory & Henry 6, Dominican 0 The Stars got a one-out single in the top of the first by
Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.), but could not push her across after getting into scoring position with a stolen base.
In the Wasps half of the first, Emory & Henry loaded the bases and got a single run across in the frame when Bethany Ande singled to left. Dominican's
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) then got the Stars out of the inning, getting Hannah Bays swinging.
Dominican got its second hit of the game when Burns started the second with a bunt single, but Burns was erased trying to steal second. The Stars did not have a baserunner the rest of the way while the Wasps got another RBI single from Ande in the third to make it a 2-0 lead for Emory and Henry.
In the fourth, the Wasps tacked on three, including a two-run blast to center that ended the day for Locher.
Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) tossed a scoreless fifth for Dominican while Babusci came on in the sixth, allowing one run on a triple by off the bat of Taylor Hodge.
