The Dominican University baseball team fell to the Haverford College Fords 12-5 on Friday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida, surrendering a seven-spot in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie.
Â
With one out and runners on first and second, the Fords' Ben Verducci picked up what proved to be the game-winning RBI, lining a single to left to score George Hatimaya and giving Haverford their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth. After a walk and an infield single, Dominican's
Chance Emlund (Chicago, III.) who went eight-plus innings, was lifted for
Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) with the bases loaded and two runs already across in the frame. After Hayes hit the first batter he faced to force in a run, Casey Fox followed with a RBI pinch hit single. A wild pitch forced across another run before Hatimaya doubled to left center to push across two more for the Fords.
Â
Dominican went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to drop the Stars to 2-4 with one game remaining on the team's spring trip.
Â
Dominican got on the board in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a Fords' error to score one run after
Max Jungblut (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Â
In the second, Dominican's
Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) delivered a two-out, bases loaded double that scored two to give the Stars a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Emlund, making his second start of the season, ran into trouble in the third as the Fords strung together three straight hits with one out to score their first run of the game. A fielder's choice plated another run before Nick Ott doubled to left center to even the game at 3-3 after three innings.
Â
The Stars pulled back in front in the bottom of the fourth on
Richie Green's (Chicago, III.) RBI single that scored Milne Rojek, who picked up his third hit of the game earlier in the inning.
Â
Dominican added a single run in the fifth as
Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, III.), who was 3-for-4 in the game, drove in
Kevin Schwer (Evergreen Park, III.) with a double down the left field line.
Â
The Fords loaded the bases in the sixth with nobody out. Emlund got Hatimaya to fly out to left before striking out the next hitter. With two out, Emlund appeared out of the inning before a ball squirted through Janison at first, allowing two runs to score and tie the game at 5-5.
Â
Dominican only had one hitter reach base the rest of the way, as Milne Rojek reached on an error with one out in the eighth and never put another runner in scoring position.
Â
Emlund was tagged with the loss for Dominican. The left-hander lasted 8.1 innings, surrendering ten runs, eight earned, on 16 hits and one walk while striking out ten.
Â
Jungblut, Milne Rojek and Natividad all logged a multi-hit game for the Stars as Dominican tallied 12 hits in the losing effort. Milne Rojek was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored while Jungblut went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles.
Â
The Stars close out their 2015 spring trip on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. EST game against the College of Wooster. The Stars return to the Midwest and head to Millikin on Saturday, March 21, for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Big Blue in Decatur.
