Stars Split On Sunday

The Dominican University baseball team split a split doubleheader on Sunday, topping the Cornell College Rams 7-4 before falling to the host North Park University Vikings in the nightcap, 17-7.

The split pushes the Stars to 3-8 with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play starting next weekend with Dominican traveling to Rockford University on Saturday before returning to Schaumburg for the Stars' home opener against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Sunday.

Game One:  Dominican 7, Cornell 4

Trailing 4-3 after seven innings, the Stars used a four-run top of the eighth to slip past the Rams.  The Stars took advantage of three fielding errors by Cornell in the frame to plate four unearned runs en route to the victory.

Freshman Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.), making his second start on the mound of the season, helped his own cause, starting the top of the eighth with an infield single.  The Stars managed to load the bases after back-to-back errors by the Rams on sacrifice bunts.  Dominican then jumped in front as Quentin Becquey (St. Julien Le Faucon, France) hit a grounder to third that the Rams threw away, allowing two runs to score.  Alex Hernandez (Des Plaines, III.) followed with an RBI single and Dominican tacked on the fourth run of the inning when Max Jungblut bounced into a double play with the bases still loaded.

Janison, who tossed eight innings to pick up his first win of the season, then turned the game over to Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) who tossed a one-two-three ninth, striking out two, to pick up his first save.

In total, Janison surrendered four runs, just one earned, on 12 hits and one walk while punching out nine.

Offensively, the Stars collected eight hits, led by Hernandez who went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI in his first start of the season.

Game Two:  North Park 17, Dominican 7

Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings broke the game open with a nine-run inning.

Chance Emlund (Chicago, III.) suffered the loss for the Stars, allowing 12 runs, nine earned, on 11 hits and five walks.  Emlund lasted four-plus innings before giving way to the Stars' bullpen.

Offensively, the Stars managed 12 hits led by freshman Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, III.) who went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and two RBI.
