The Dominican University men's volleyball team dropped a heart-breaking five set match (25-19, 26-28, 25-23, 25-18, 15-9) to the Mount St. Joseph University Lions in the semifinals of the inaugural Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) Tournament. The loss drops the 15
th-ranked Stars to 15-11 on the season, their second season as an NCAA Division III program.
Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) tallied a team-high 16.5 points for the Stars in the losing effort, knocking down nine kills and accounting for five of the Stars' eight service aces. The sophomore middle also tallied five block assists.
Brad McFarland (Tinley Park, Ill.) made the most of his 14
th start of the season, posting his second double-double of the year with a team-high 14 kills and 12 digs.
The Stars managed to hit just .162 for the match as the Lions collected 59 digs and tallied eight total blocks while forcing 26 hitting errors. Dominican's
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) dished out 46 kills, utilizing seven different attackers including
Aidan Spangler (Western Springs, Ill.) who had nine kills and
Zachery Sinn (Winfield, Ill.) and
Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) who had eight apiece.
The Lions, led by Alex Vohland's match-high 28 kills, hit .304 in the match and advance to the MCVL Championship match where they will meet the top-seeded Carthage College Red Men on Saturday afternoon.
