The Dominican University softball team salvaged a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) split on Sunday at the Stadium at the Ballpark in Rosemont when
Marissa Burns' (Shorewood, Ill.) single to center scored Lindsey Dudek for a 5-4 walkoff win in game two over the Edgewood College Eagles.
The split pushes the Stars to 22-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play. Dominican will be back on the diamond next Saturday, heading to Aurora University to take on the Spartans in a conference series.
Game One: Edgewood 7, Dominican 4 Dominican scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Burns tripled to right center to score
Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) and Burns later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead after one inning.
However, Dominican could not get another base runner until the sixth while Edgewood plated single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to force extras.
In the top of the ninth, Edgewood strung together five hits and capitalized on a pair of Dominican miscues in the field to score five runs and open a 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dominican scraped together three hits to score two runs but left the tying run in the on-deck circle as
Catherine Conte (Elmwood Park, Ill.) bounced out to third to end the game.
Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) suffered just her second loss of the season, charged with five runs over 8.1 innings on 11 hits.
Burns and Hausl managed two hits apiece, but Dominican's five through eight hitters went a combined 0-for-13.
Game Two: Dominican 5, Edgewood 4 The Stars erased a 4-1 deficit after four innings, plating three runs in the bottom of the fifth before Burns and the Stars walked off in the seventh.
Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.) led off the bottom of the first with an inside-the-park home run to even the score at 1-1 after one inning.
Edgewood pushed across three runs in the top of the third, stringing together two hits and a walk and taking advantage of a Dominican error to open a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hausl singled to left with the bases loaded to score a pair of runs and Burns followed with an RBI single up the middle to even the game at 4-4.
Lindsey Dudek (Posen, Ill.) worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and Hausl singled through the left side to put runners at first and second for Burns with one out. Burns was slightly jammed on a 1-1 pitch but managed to drive a soft liner to center that allowed Dudek to cross the plate for the winning run.
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) picked up the win, working out of trouble all game but managing to strand ten runners for the Eagles in the game. In moving to 7-5 on the season, Locher allowed eight hits and walked six over seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned.
Offensively, Rea and Hausl collected three hits apiece while Burns went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
