Game Recap: Softball |

Stars Split With Eagles

The Dominican University softball team split with the Benedictine University Eagles on Sunday, taking game one in extra innings before surrendering game two to move to 23-11 on the year and 11-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).

The Stars have just two regular season series remaining, hosting the Concordia University Wisconsin at Forest Park on Friday before closing out the regular season with the MSOE Raiders on Saturday.

Game One:  Dominican 1, Benedictine 0 (8 Inn.)

Michele Behrens (Frankfort, Ill.) tossed an eight-inning, complete game shutout to pick up her eighth win of the season.  The freshman left-hander used just 105 pitches, scattering three hits and two walks while letting her defense work behind her.  Behrens worked around errors in the first and fourth and stranded a leadoff double in the home half of the second.

In the seventh, the Eagles got a leadoff off single, but that was erased by the Dominican defense with Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.) starting a double play with a running catch in center field.  Then in the eighth, Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.) helped secure the win, robbing Courtney Grasz of a hit with a diving catch in left to end the game.

The Stars' offense collected seven hits but stranded eight runners before finally scratching across the lone run of the game in the top of the eighth.  Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) started the rally with a two-out single.  Marissa Burns (Shorewood, Ill.) then followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second with one out.  After a pop out, Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) picked up the game-winning hit, singling to center to plate Hausl.

The single was the second hit of the game for Procter, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.

Game Two:  Benedictine 6, Dominican 1

Behrens returned to the circle in game two but lasted just two-plus innings, surrendering two runs on three hits before giving way to the Dominican bullpen.  Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) allowed four runs over the next three innings, giving up six hits as the Stars fell, 6-1.

The Stars' offense could only scratch out one run off of Benedictine's Melissa Guzior.  Evans doubled to score Catherine Conte (Elmwood Park, Ill.) in the top of the second as the Stars took a 1-0 lead.  However, the lead was short lived as Benedictine plated two in the bottom of the third and never trailed again.
