The Dominican University women's soccer team suffered a slight setback on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Elmhurst College Bluejays 1-0 in River Forest.
Â
The lone tally came in the 74
th minute when Elmhurst's Sidney O'Keefe won the endline just outside the 18-yard box to the right of Dominican's goal before sliding a pass toward the penalty spot that Brittany Reinhardt got on the end of and finished for the goal, beating the Stars'
Vanessa Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) to the far post.
Â
"We were breaking down in the middle and we weren't stepping soon enough which allowed them to cross it into the middle of our box," said team captain
Kelli Iovino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) when asked about the goal. "Fitness is something we are going to work on but we are still learning."
Â
Dominican's top chance came in the tenth minute when
Taylor Adler (Shorewood, Ill.) got in behind Elmhurst on a run that started out near midfield. In a footrace with the Elmhurst backline, Adler got off a shot on a bouncing ball, lifting a shot over the crossbar.
Â
"We had an early chance and didn't finish," commented Dominican's second-year head coach
Carlos Carrillo. "Both teams had chances in the first half and it might be a different game if we take advantage of ours."
Â
The Bluejays outshot the Stars 18-9 for the game, including an 11-2 advantage over the final 45 minutes, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Â
Gonzalez tallied eight saves while taking the loss in goal for the Stars.
Â
Dominican returns to action on Friday night, traveling to Naperville where the Stars will battle with North Central College. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
