The Dominican University women's soccer team picked up their second consecutive win on Sunday afternoon, scoring three second half goals to top the visiting St. Norbert College Green Knights in River Forest.
Kelli Iovino (Arlington Heights, Ill.), the Stars' leading scorer from 2014 with 17 goals, netted a hat trick, scoring the game-tying goal in the first half before logging the eventual game-winner and an insurance marker in the second half to pace the Stars.
"It was a matter of time before Kelli came around," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' second-year head coach when asked about Iovino. "Early on the opportunities weren't coming, but today are offense was clicking and when our offense is on, Kelli Iovino is going to be right in the middle of things and find her self in opportunities to finish."
The Stars fell behind just six minutes into the non-conference contest when Katie Vanden Avond received a ball served by Shannon Jung near the top of the 18-yard box and one-touched a chip shot over the head of Dominican's
Vanessa Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) who came off her line and was beat for an early lead for the St. Norbert.
The Stars then began pressing forward, eventually leveling the score in the 23
rd minute when Iovino cut a defender to work her way into the box before sliding a shot from the penalty spot that beat St. Norbert's Maddie Plinska.
Dominican 12-5 in the first half but the score was even 1-1 heading into the second 45.
Iovino put the Stars on top in the 63
rd minute as the Stars capitalized on a throw-in in Dominican's offensive third of the field. Freshman
Tania Paez (Chicago, Ill.) threw to the feet of
Taylor Adler (Shorewood, Ill.) who weaved her way into the 18-yard box before sliding a pass to Iovino that left the forward 1v1 with Plinska.
Minutes later, Vanden Avond had a golden opportunity to knot the score at 2-2 after the senior was awarded a PK after being taken down in the corner of the Dominican box but missed the goal with her attempt.
Just two minutes later, Iovino really made the missed opportunity hurt when she tallied her third goal of the match for her first hat trick of the season and third of her career when she made a run to the center of the goal mouth and was found by
Lauren Zuro (Elmwood Park, Ill.) who centered a pass after gaining the endline.
The Stars, who outshot St. Norbert 12-2 in the second half, added a second insurance goal in the 73
rd minute when Paez notched her first career goal with a helper from Iovino.
"Early on we came out a little unorganized in the back line," said Carrillo. "That cost us the early goal but we quickly organized and after the first ten minutes we possessed and pushed forward and really started to attack."
Pamela Ruiz (Dallas, Texas) picked up the win in goal for Dominican, facing two shots while playing the final 31 minutes in goal.
The Stars are now 2-2-0 on the season and set to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play next Saturday when they host the MSOE Raiders for a noon kickoff on West Campus Field.
