The Dominican University women's basketball team came up short against the Edgewood College Eagles on Saturday afternoon, falling 61-53 despite a season-high 24 points from senior
Allie Tapanes (Winfield, Ill.).
Dominican led 18-17 after the first quarter but went scoreless over the first six minutes of the second quarter and was outscored 13-3 in the quarter to trail 30-21 at the break.
Edgewood increased the lead to 14 points, 46-32, after three quarters before Dominican started to chip away. Tapanes converted an and-one with 3:42 to go to pull the Stars within six, 52-46, but Dominican could not get any closer.
Tapanes shot 8-for-20 from the field but converted on seven of nine attempts from the foul line in 40 minutes of work.
As a team, the Stars shot just 20-for-60 and connected on just two of 17 attempts from the behind the three-point stripe.
Rachel Pope and Sierra Jiran scored 19 apiece for Edgewood in the winning effort.
Dominican, now 3-14 overall, returns to action on Wednesday, hosting the Benedictine University Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
