Order Restored: Stars Claim Outright NACC Championship

The Dominican University men's soccer team, thanks to a second half, free kick goal by Jonathan Arzeta, earned their tenth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) regular season championship in program history with a 1-1 draw with the Benedictine University Eagles in Lisle, Illinois, on Wednesday night.

The Eagles, needing a win to earn a share of the NACC crown, opened the scoring in the 14th minute of play as Nick Kapetanos netted his 24th goal of the season on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box.

The Eagles played with the lead into the 70th minute when Dominican capitalized on a restart with Arzeta beating Antonio Marti-Polo on his own free kick.

Dominican then preserved the draw with a couple of big saves late in regulation by senior goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora.  In total, the Stars' keeper made five saves to come up huge for Dominican.

"It's a good thing we woke up at halftime and came out to compete in the second half," said Dominican's Erick Baumann following the match. "It wasn't pretty by any means, but we got one of the two results we needed to win the conference championship outright. We are going to hit the reset button and get ready for the conference tournament."

Dominican, now 12-2-3 on the season and 9-0-1 in the NACC, will sit idle during the conference's quarterfinal games this weekend before returning to the pitch on Wednesday, November 2, when the Stars will host a NACC semifinal match.  Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
