The Dominican University women's basketball team was outscored by the Alverno College Inferno 20-9 in the third quarter in a 60-44 loss in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night.
The Stars and Inferno were tied at the half, 20-20, before Alverno capitalized on 13 Dominican turnovers in the third quarter to open a 40-29 lead heading to the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Dominican narrowed the lead to four, 42-38, when
Timiya Ray nailed a three with 7:15 to play but the Inferno pulled away, outscoring the Stars 18-6 over the final 6:15.
"Taking care of the ball is our Achilles heel right now," said
Gabby Johnson following the loss. "Most of our mistakes are unforced which comes with having a young team. We have to find a fight within us to overcome mistakes and not allow teams to have a big quarter."
Ray paced the Stars with 14 points despite being limited to a season-low 19 minutes with foul trouble. Ray shot 6-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three.
For the Inferno, Donna Zehner scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Mackenzie Mathies logged 15 points.
The Stars, now 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), return home for the first time since November 15, hosting the MSOE Raiders on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. game.
