Stars Fall in Extras to Bears on Getaway Day

The Dominican University baseball team fell to the Coast Guard in 11 innings on getaway day at Terry Park for the Stars in Fort Myers, Florida.  The 14-11 loss sets the Stars' overall season record to 5-6, with Dominican return with a 4-4 record from the team's eight games played in Florida.

Saturday's setback took 4:03 to complete with the teams scratching out 26 hits combined.

The Bears got on the board in the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead.  Dominican answered in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a Bears' miscue that allowed Dominican's Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) to cross the plate.

In the third, the Coast Guard tacked on another run that Dominican matched in the bottom of the inning when McKinney singled to score Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, Ill.).

In the bottom of the fourth the Stars pulled ahead, scoring five runs to open a 7-4 lead.   KJ Wilk (Shelby Township, Mich.), Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) and McKinney all had hits to help drive in the runs.

In the fifth, the Bears would put up a couple of runs to momentarily pull within a run at 7-6 before the Stars would match with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Bears managed to get another three hits in the sixth to tie the game at nine runs apiece.

The scoreboard would show three columns of zeros as the Stars would go into extra innings.  The Coast guard managed to put a run up in the top of the tenth inning that Dominican would again match when Schuster doubled to plate Natividad with one away.

In the 11th, the Coast Guard put up a four spot and the Stars were unable to recover as they only scored a single run and stranded two runners on the bases.

The Stars will fly back to Chicago tonight, returning to River Forest, Ill.  The Stars will have a week to prepare before they take on MacMurray College on the road in Jacksonville, Ill., for a doubleheader starting at noon.
